Spring is Here!

By Selene Muldowney

Alas it is the time we all await as we watch the snow melt and the ground thaw.  The earth is fresh, the ground fierce with life, grasses grow in the fields and the yards, and the call of the baby lambs awakens our renewed spirit. This past winter has been challenging for many across the globe, as hurricane winds topple buildings, waves and water flood the once dry land, and enough snow fell to create an earth size ‘snow globe’ – not to mention several earthquakes and angry hurricanes. Many of us hunkered down, some brave enough to face the chill in the air and others completely insane as they don their drysuits and dive into the icy waters. Despite what winter offered us we remain hopeful for the sun warming our skin, the salty air filling our lungs, and the sound of life surrounding us.

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,

so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw

open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary’s cage,

indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths

and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight

that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight

on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants

from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,

holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,

well, today is just that kind of day.
