Embracing a new model for community magazines!

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice.” by T.S. Eliot

The new year stands in front of us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We create each chapter of the story as we embark on our journey through life. Each page is filled with our daily successes, sometimes our failures, great adventures, and accomplishments. As we explore our lives we create new pages eventually filling up those chapters in our book of life.

This past year I took on the role as the publisher of Scuba & H2O Adventures Magazine (all of it – the good and the bad).  I am the first and only female publisher in this industry and it has been a unique challenge. I am grateful for the support from my editor, who has taken on a significant leadership role, as well as the writers who continue to believe in our mission and share their great stories.

Over the past year we changed the focus of the magazine from being solely a scuba diving resource to incorporating what the community values; learning about who they are, what they do, and how they use their resources to help shape a healthier global community and encourage others to become better stewards of the earth.

Who is our community?

In the past year we grew the publication from 45k readers a month to more than 160k people on average. Great stories, more effective marketing, and a positive attitude!

I believe the best way to build a community is to communicate with one another and work together for our common goals. Something draws us together and that draw is what inspires us each month, be it our love for scuba diving or watersports in general, the environment, or maybe historians in search of great shipwrecks.

It is simple to put words on a page but what we often lack is the genuine sentiment behind those words. I want my magazine to become OUR magazine – content to draw a community closer.

Our goal is to represent the community – the real community – the silent heroes who cannot afford to pay big money for promotions, who don’t ask for accolades because their service to their community is their mission and focus, the folks who dedicate their time, money, and resources to be better stewards of the earth.

The SCUBA community does not have any other publication that truly represents the local communities the way we have. They certainly share amazing stories – all graciously paid for or provided by authors who travel the world in search of the perfect vacation spot, perfect photographic opportunity, perfect sunny day across saint somewhere. They are pretty and perfect. But let’s get real – the world isn’t pretty or perfect and most folks do super cool things in their own backyards yet no magazine or periodical is covering their story.

We have been covering these stories: The local Texas dive shop run by women who sponsor the first and only Girl Scout troop – they want to teach the young women to use scuba as the vehicle to achieve their goals of environmental cleanup in the oceans. The story about the folks in Alabama working hard to build reefs so they can create sustainable fisheries and nurseries for fish and other aquatic mammals to seek shelter, have babies, and feed. The photographer who dedicates his life to providing safe and accessible waters  for manatees in Florida. The folks who created a program to spot sharks so they can determine their life cycles and movement so as to develop safe and effective controls to protect this endangered species – the sand tiger shark. The stories continue across the globe and we want to cover them so they can get the promotions they need to reach you and find support and funding to continue: from local dive shops to reef builders!

We want to cover the stories the other publications won’t touch.

THE REAL COMMUNITY!
