Divers Alert Network® (DAN®) congratulates Captain Kathy Weydig, the chair of its board of directors, for being selected as Beneath the Sea’s Diver of the Year for Science. A dive industry leader for more than three decades, Weydig is a steadfast promoter of exploration, education and safety.

An emergency medical technician, dive medical technician, certified hyperbaric technologist and U.S. Coast Guard 100-Ton Master Captain, Weydig has held a variety of interesting positions. She was training director at the City Island (New York) Hyperbaric Center and deputy harbor master in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She is currently the boating safety officer for the San Bernardino County (California) Sheriff’s Department and president of Tech Diving Limited. She has served on the board of directors at DAN since 2004 and was elected chair in 2018.

Weydig is currently active as an instructor trainer for Scuba Diving International/Technical Diving International (SDI/TDI) and an instructor for the Emergency Care and Safety Institute and the National Safe Boating Council. She is also an experienced instructor of divers with disabilities.

Among Weydig’s most notable achievements is having co-founded the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame and being instrumental in the creation of the organization’s scholarship program. For the past eight years she has worked with the Boy Scouts of American to expand its Sea Scouts program. Her goal with the expansion is to develop Scuba Ships, a program in which parents and youth leaders establish programs to teach Boy Scouts to scuba dive and introduce them to boating, sailing and marine engineering.

In addition to her accomplishments in dive safety and training, Weydig is a seasoned underwater explorer. She has been lead diver, organizer and permit holder for four USS Monitor expeditions and carried Explorers Club Flag #155 to the wreck during a 2004 expedition. Weydig has dived a host of other deep wrecks including the Andrea Doria, the USS Wilkes Barre and the B-29 Bomber in Lake Mead.

“We are thrilled that Beneath the Sea has recognized Kathy’s significant accomplishments in the dive industry,” said Bill Ziefle, DAN president and CEO. “From the time she’s invested in DAN to her work with the Coast Guard to promote dive boat safety standards to her work with Sea Scouts to empower the next generation of divers she has been a tireless advocate for diving.”
